US Cautions Dokubo, Tompolo, Others Over Inflammatory Statements | United States Commission on International Religious Freedom

The United States Commission on International Religious Freedom (USCIRF) has cautioned former militants of the Niger Delta, Alhaji Mujaheed Dokubo-Asari, Victor Ben Ebikabowei aka Boy Loaf, and Government Ekpemupolo, aka, Tompolo, over all the inflammatory statements that are being credited to them in the build up to the presidential election that is coming up next week Saturday.
The commission while making this warning in its latest report which its chairman, Dr. Katina Lantos Swett, made available to correspondents of the Department of State in Washington, DC during the week, added that such statements coming from the former militants who have been threatening wars if President Goodluck Jonathan loses the election, could lead to a religiously-motivated violence if proper measures are not taken by politicians and security agents in good time.
Reacting to the inflammatory statements that are being credited to the former militants, the USCRIF warned President Goodluck Jonathan and other candidates to prevent the looming electoral violence by calming their supporters as well as warning them against such statements.
USCIRF also called on all Nigeria’s political parties to hold responsible their members who are issuing statements inciting violence along religious lines. It also called on the Nigeria’s police and judiciary to impartially hold accountable all perpetrators of electoral violence.
The agency however hailed the decision of the United States to withhold visas to persons who engage in, plan, and/or perpetrate electoral violence in Nigeria, adding that such decision would send a strong message in support of peaceful elections in the country. It also maintained that every effort needed to be undertaken to ensure peaceful elections and prevent the use of religion to stir up more violence
Meanwhile, the United Nations Security Council has condemned in the strongest terms the continued escalation of attacks perpetrated by Boko Haram terrorists, pointing to an attack on 1 February in Borno State, Nigeria and to increasing attacks in the Lake Chad Basin region, including, on 29 and 30 January, against Chadian forces deployed in Cameroon near the town of Fotokol, which killed four Chadian soldiers and injured 12 others.
In a statement issued to the press in New York, the 15 members extended their condolences and sympathies to the families of those killed and injured, and to the peoples and the Governments of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and Chad.
Recalling their Presidential Statement of 19 January this year, Council members reiterated their deep concern that the activities of Boko Haram are undermining the peace and stability of the West and Central African region.
They urged the region to enhance regional military operations and coordination to more effectively and immediately combat Boko Haram. In that regard, they commended the Chadian army’s swift assistance in Cameroon, which resulted in neutralisation of 123 Boko Haram combatants and the capture of others.
Members of the 15-State body reaffirmed that terrorism in all its forms and manifestations, including the actions of Boko Haram, constitutes one of the most serious threats to international peace and security, and that any acts of terrorism are criminal and unjustifiable, regardless of their motivation, wherever, whenever and by whosoever committed.

Airlines Operating Without Nigerian Pilots Will Be Grounded – Minister

Airlines Operating Without Nigerian Pilots Will Be Grounded – Minister
The minister of aviation, Osita Chidoka, in an speech, yesterday, said the federal government has stopped all aircraft registered as private from doing charter services and other commercial operations.
Chidoka, who reeled out a series of important reformative actions of the ministry under his leadership said any private airline doing commercial operations without regularising its operations before February 5, 2015, would be grounded by the regulators.
The minister, who stated the reforms in a keynote address at a ceremony shortly before the unveiling of the Aviation Commits, a reformative customer-centric initiative, also directed that all airlines operating in Nigeria without a Nigerian pilot in its crew by July 1, 2015, would also be grounded, as he said airlines can now operate round-the-clock and no longer limited by time.
As part of the aviation reforms, all agricultural products exports are to be exempted from paying the five per cent cargo charge. Also, all domestic airlines would be required to train their pilots yearly as they would only get their Airline Operators’ Certificate (AOC) renewed on a satisfactory plan for training their pilots, in addition to other existing requirements.
The minister said, “By the February 5, 2015, all private registered aircrafts in general aviation operation which also provide commercial services will be grounded by the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). “We will publish their names and we are saying that none of them will be on our airspace if they do not regularise their operations. We hope they will all come under this regulatory purview.”
He said the ministry will also harmonise charges to avoid multiplication of levies. He also said the Aviation Commits initiative is a customer-centric step by the ministry to “bring back the customer.”
The initiative will be a campaign to create awareness on the passengers’ bill of right. “It is aimed at re-packaging, re-branding and re-directing the aviation industry in Nigeria towards enhanced service delivery and customer satisfaction,” the minister said.

Italian Allan Franchillo arraigned for defrauding Zenith Bank of over N700 million
The Special Fraud Unit (SFU) of the police on Tuesday arraigned an expatriate businessman, Piero Allan Franchillo at the Federal High Court in Lagos for allegedly defrauding Zenith Bank Plc of over N700 million.
The 56-year-old was charged with five counts of advance fee fraud, forgery and uttering false document.
He was alleged to have conspired with others on the run to obtain N717,403,475.36 from Zenith Bank for the construction of Delta Mall at Effurum, Delta State.
The police said he fraudulently converted the money to his own use rather than executing the project.
The alleged offence was committed between August 2013 and April last year at Zenith Bank’s headquarters in Victoria Island.
According to the prosecution, Franchilo, said to be Italian, also “did forge an extract of minutes of meeting of the board of directors of New Technic Construction Nigeria Limited purportedly held on August 26, 2013, accepting APG/Bid Bond Line for enhancement of N1.5billion and overdraft renewal of N50million for the construction of Delta Mall.”
He was accused of uttering the forged document, which enabled him to obtain the N717million from the bank.
The alleged offences contravene section 8 (a) of the Advance Fee Fraud and other Related Offences Act (2010), and sections 390 (1), 467 and 468 of the Criminal Code, Cap C.38, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria (2010).
Franchilo pleaded not guilty to all the counts.
Justice Mohammed Idris adjourned till Friday for ruling on the accused person’s bail application.

Ailing Nollywood actor may be flown abroad

Ailing Nollywood actor may be flown abroad
Acting on a medical report that Nollywood actor, James Uche, is due for a kidney transplant, some members of the Society of St. Vincent De Paul in Our Lady the Queen of Peace Catholic Church, Gbagada, are considering flowing him abroad for treatment.

Although no destination has been chosen yet, members of the Society may be looking at a few options. One of them told our correspondent, in a telephone interview, that their next move will be determined by the content of a comprehensive medical report on the actor’s condition.
She said, “We are waiting for a comprehensive medical report on Prince James Uche’s condition. We have asked the doctor to make a referral for treatment abroad and send us the cost implication. Even one of our parishioners left for India recently, though on a different business. We have asked her to provide some information on the quality of health service in that country. It will enable us to make a decision about where to take Uche for proper medical care. We don’t want to make mistakes.”
On Sunday, the Society of St. Vincent De Paul at Our Lady the Queen of Peace Catholic Church held a meeting with the medical team in the parish to discuss what to do about Uche’s failing health.
Last Friday, The PUNCH reported that the ailing actor, whose condition has deteriorated significantly, faced ejection from his residence at 45, Yetunde Brown St, also in the Gbagada area of Lagos, in addition to being abandoned to his fate by both friends and family.

SHOCKING NEWS: Mbaka’s message, not from Holy Spirit

SHOCKING NEWS: Mbaka’s message, not from Holy Spirit
The Southern Nigeria Christian Elders’Forum, SOCEF, Sunday, faulted the prophetic message of Enugu Catholic Priest, Rev. Fr. Ejike Mbaka, concerning President Goodluck Jonathan.
Addressing journalists shortly after their meeting in Enugu, the Forum said Fr. Mbaka’s message was merely his personal opinion and not from the inspiration of the Holy Spirit.
The meeting was attended by Archbishops, Bishops and other Christian leaders from the South-West, South-South and the South-East, including Most Rev. A.N.C Anikwenwa, Bishop Dr. Peter Ogumuyiwa, Most Rev. Caleb Maduoma, Rev. Dr. Felix Ekiye, among others.
The Chairman of the Forum, Bishop David Eberechukwu, said it was not the first time Fr, Mbaka would be making such claims.
“In 2003, he said that then Governor Chimaroke Nnamani would not get re-election and that if that happens, he would remove his cassock; indeed, Chimaroke was re-elected and up till today, he has not removed his cassock.
“So, his message is just a personal opinion; it didn’t come from the impulse of the Holy Spirit”, he maintained.
In a 10-point communique issued by the Forum and read by Bishop Eberechukwu, the group stated that for the sake of equity and fairness, President Goodluck Jonathan should be allowed to complete a second tenure on behalf of the South-South zone.
“We note that the South-West zone has occupied the seat of the presidency of this country for eight years, from 1999-2007. It was on the basis of principle of rotation that the next President of the Federal Republic came from the North-West. If the cold hands of death had not taken him away from us, that occupant of the presidency from the North-West would havebeen elected for a second term.
